NYTimes - needs strategy now!

I have been following and fascinated by NY times for quite a while although I subscribe to the actual paper only recently. Not to mention, I have been hitting NYTimes.com quite regularly and every now and then we hear that the site might replace the paper one day. And now, we have the iphone app. Here is what I find in my analysis so far;

  • All three serves different different purpose and NYT might have to keep all of them going for now.
  • Why? Last week's paper featured an article on 'Malabar' - an Indian restaurant in the suburbs of NJ. I am 100% sure, I wouldn't have come to know about this place reading just NYTimes.com or tracking the iphone version
  • Why? Last week's paper had a 2-3 page long article on Calcutta/ Kolkata and I am sure not many people can read articles of such length on the website, leave alone the phone
  • Why? This week, the iphone version tells me that the most popular news is the launch of mifi, a pocket wifi product. Check out the video review here: http://video.nytimes.com/video/2009/05/07/technology/personaltech/1194840068163/verizon-novatel-mifi-personal-hot-spot.html
  • Again, I spoted this on my phone because the app has 'most emailed' option where I can track the popular news which can never be done on the newspaper. Also, the video review wouldn't work on the phone as it is a flash file. Hence, it works only on the website.
So, to summarize, NYT head honcos probably realize that they need all these mediums for different purposes and auidence. However, each should be monitized differently. For example, I am prepared to pay a buck a month for the iphone app provided it doesn't crash!

Agree all 3 are needed for now...but really have to verify your examples for at least a day's news:) Just kidding!
I like to read through 'paper' rather 'web' but guess as we move more towards the greener world(rather conserving what we have) paperless is the only way -no options
